Sports increase well-being of gay and lesbian athletes

20 February 2014

Sport groups for LGBT athletes actually help heal the negative effects of discrimination, Waterloo research finds.  Steven Mock, assistant professor in Waterloo’s Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies has just published research that shows   LGBT-focused sports involvement is especially helpful for people who have had very negative experiences related to homophobia, harassment and discrimination. "It helps them come to terms with their identity and increases the likelihood of them disclosing their sexual minority identity in their everyday life.” notes Mock.

Most of the research respondents are from our OutSport Toronto leagues.  Thank you to all who participated in this very important research.
